Mixed-Mode Operation of Hybrid Phase-Change Nanophotonic Circuits

2016

Phase change materials (PCMs) are highly attractive for nonvolatile electrical and all-optical memory applications because of unique features such as ultrafast and reversible phase transitions, long-term endurance, and high scalability to nanoscale dimensions. Understanding their transient characteristics upon phase transition in both the electrical and the optical domains is essential for using PCMs in future multifunctional optoelectronic circuits. Here, we use a PCM nanowire embedded into a nanophotonic circuit to study switching dynamics in mixed-mode operation. Evanescent coupling between light traveling along waveguides and a phase-change nanowire enables reversible phase transition b…

First experimental demonstration of a plasmonic MMI switch in 10 Gb/s true data traffic conditions

2012

We report the first experimental performance evaluation of a 75 um long plasmonic MMI switch, hetero-integrated on a SOI platform, operating with 10Gb/s data signals. The switch exhibits 2.9μs response time and 44.5% modulation depth while its extinction ratio varies from 5.4 to -1.5 dB for 35mW switching power. Error-free performance was achieved.

Photo-thermal control of surface plasmon mode propagation at telecom wavelengths

2016

Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) is the promising versatile platform proposed for guiding electromagnetic waves at nanoscale dimensions. In this context dynamic control of SPPs prop- agation is of paramount importance. Thermo-optical (TO) effect is considered as an efficient technique for performing active control of plasmonic devices. Among the thermo-optical based plasmonic devices demonstrated so far TO coefficient is dominantly provided by a dielectric material on top of the metal sustaining the SPP mode, however, the role of TO properties of the metal has been rarely investigated for plasmonic applications especially at the telecom frequency ranges. Therefore, the aim of this thesis i…

<title>Evolution of optical links toward full-optical transparency</title>

2003

In this paper we review issues of evolution of optical networks towards their full optical transparency and present sequence of eliminating non-transparent elements out of optical links (networks). Architectures of optical commutators with electrical and optical cores have been presented, as well as a structure of OMO (optical-millimeter wave-optical) switching fabric. An example of pure al-optical switch, made by Luxcore, utilizing dispersion compensating elements, wavelength converters and and variable optical attenuators (VOA) operating entirely in optical domain without optical-electrical-optical (OEO) conversions, was quoted. We brought up an issue of all-optical 3R signal regeneration…

LSOM: A Link State protocol Over MAC addresses for metropolitan backbones using Optical Ethernet switches

2003

This paper presents a new protocol named "Link State Over MAC" (LSOM) for Optical Ethernet switches to allow the use of active loop topologies, like meshes, in Metropolitan Area Networks (MAN) or even Wide Area Networks (WAN) backbone. In this respect, LSOM is an alternative to a ring topology as proposed in draft IEEE 802.17 Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) or a tree topology using IEEE802. 1D Rapid Spanning Tree Protocol (RSTP). LSOM provides higher scalability and is able to achieve better bandwidth utilization and lower latency than RSTP and RPR. Simulation results for 4-node and 9-node topologies show that LSOM can improve throughput over RPR by a factor of up to 1.7. Furthermore, full free…

Optical flip-flop memory and routing operation based on polarization bistability in optical fiber

2014

A polarization bistability and hysteresis cycle phenomenon is demonstrated in optical fibers thanks to a counter-propagating four-wave mixing interaction. Based on this process, we successfully report the proof-of-principle of an optical flip-flop memory and a 10-Gbit/s routing operation.

Silicon-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides for nanosecond thermo-optical switching

2014

A MHz-bandwidth thermo-optical (TO) plasmonic switch operating at telecommunication wavelengths and based on a hybrid solid-state silicon-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide design is demonstrated numerically. The nanosecond (ns) TO response of the switch is due to the high thermal conductivities of the employed materials and we demonstrate specifically a 10 dB extinction ratio in the time-dependent switch transmission which features a pulsed 1 ns rise time followed by a 25 ns fall time when the switch is photo-thermally activated by a ns pulse at 532 nm wavelength.

0.48Tb/s (12x40Gb/s) WDM transmission and high-quality thermo-optic switching in dielectric loaded plasmonics

2012

We demonstrate Wavelength Division Multiplexed (WDM)-enabled transmission of 480Gb/s aggregate data traffic (12x40Gb/s) as well as high-quality 1x2 thermo-optic tuning in Dielectric-Loaded Surface Plasmon Polariton Waveguides (DLSPPWs). The WDM transmission characteristics have been verified through BER measurements by exploiting the heterointegration of a 60 mu m-long straight DLSPPW on a Silicon-on-Insulator waveguide platform, showing error-free performance for six out of the twelve channels. High-quality thermo-optic tuning has been achieved by utilizing Cycloaliphatic-Acrylate-Polymer as an efficient thermo-optic polymer loading employed in a dual-resonator DLSPPW switching structure, …
